Check out some of our favourite hiking routes below:
1. Brantfell
Length: 3.4 km
Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
Somewhat steep, this trail is, nonetheless, a pleasant walk if you are looking for something shorter! Some parts may be slippery and muddy, and you will have to climb stiles, but this is more than worth it when you take in the wonderful scenery around you. Starting in the centre of Bowness, you’ll go through part of Dales Way before finishing by climbing the Fell itself.
2. School Knott
Length: 8.04 km
Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
Finish where you start with this circular path; School Knott will take you over the railway line so, for those who enjoy trainspotting as well, there couldn’t be a more perfect route! Climb up a hill and look back at the stunning view of Lake Windermere and the Langdale Pikes, then reach the top and climb down through a path that will place you beside a peaceful tarn. You’ll soon be back in Windermere if you keep following the track.
3. Fairfield Horseshoe
Length: 16.4 km
Difficulty Level: Difficult
This route is a favourite of many hikers and perfect if you’re looking for something a little bit more challenging. There are many boggy areas here, as well as very rough and rocky terrain; you may also find it confusing to navigate around if it’s a misty day, so bring a compass just in case! This hike will show you some of the most beautiful landscapes of the Lake District, so it’s not surprising that it has become a classic amongst hikers.
