At Windermere Marina Village, we’re perfectly placed to explore one of our favourite travel trends: bakery tourism. More and more visitors are choosing to experience destinations through their food, planning days around artisan bakeries, standout cafés and iconic local bakes – and the Lake District lends itself beautifully to this slower, more delicious way of travelling.

With Windermere as a central base, it’s easy to combine lake views, scenic drives and village walks with some of the region’s best bakeries. Here’s how we’d recommend exploring the Lake District through its baking…

Keswick: A Bakery-Led Day in the Northern Lakes

Keswick is well worth the journey north and offers a brilliant mix of traditional and modern bakeries.

Lake Road Brunch is a firm favourite for a reason. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and generous plates, menu highlights include the homemade granola bowl, freshly baked pastries, and indulgent brunch pancakes that are ideal fuel before a walk by Derwentwater. It’s the sort of place that perfectly captures why bakery tourism has taken off.

Just around the corner, Bryson’s of Keswick is a long-standing local institution. Its artisan breads, pies and rotating selection of cakes showcase classic Lake District baking done exceptionally well. For something more contemporary, Yonder offers beautifully crafted pastries and excellent coffee. It’s a modern bakery café that attracts visitors specifically seeking out destination bakeries – a key part of the bakery tourism trend. If you’re looking for the perfect matcha, Yonder is the place to be.

Ambleside: The Heart of Lake District Bakery Tourism

Ambleside has long been associated with great baking and remains one of the most popular stops for food-focused visitors.

The iconic Apple Pie Bakery is a must-visit. Famous for its deep-filled apple pies, it regularly draws queues, and rightly so. This is traditional baking at its best and a true Lake District classic.

Force Café is well worth the gentle walk up to it, with the route passing through woodland and alongside the 70-foot Stock Ghyll Force waterfall, offering rewarding views as you climb. Reaching the café feels like a well-earned treat, where good coffee and homemade cakes await after one of Ambleside’s most scenic short walks. Bread lovers should also seek out Grain, known for its artisan sourdough and commitment to quality ingredients. It reflects the wider shift toward slow food and craftsmanship that defines bakery tourism.

One of the advantages of staying at Windermere Marina Village is how many excellent bakeries and cafés are close by.

Homeground Coffee & Kitchen is a standout brunch destination in Windermere. Menu highlights include house-made pastries, baked eggs, and carefully prepared seasonal brunch dishes. The baking here is consistently strong and well worth seeking out.

Toast offers a relaxed café atmosphere built around quality bread, delicious fillings and great coffee – proof that great baking underpins even the most casual dining experiences. For something sweet, Sugarfinery is known for its croffles, hot chocolates and decorative treats, ideal to enjoy after a lakeside walk or to take back and enjoy by the marina.

Staveley: A Destination Bakery Worth the Journey

No bakery tour of the Lake District would be complete without a visit to More Bakery in Staveley. Known for its exceptional sourdough, seasonal pastries and loyal following, this is very much a destination bakery. We recommend arriving early, as popular items often sell out.
