The Lake District for Families

Family holidays are a time of relaxation, fun and experiencing an adventure or two. The Lake District is the perfect place for this as you will be able to find something for every member of your family to enjoy – including those hard to please members as well. Here at Windermere Marina Village, we know the value of a good day out.

So, what is there for you and your family to do in the magical landscape of Windermere?

Family Activities

Have you a budding treasure hunter in your family? If so, they will feel right at home at the Bowness on Windermere Treasure Trail. It’s a great excuse to get the whole family outdoors and viewing the wonders that the Lakes have to offer. Self-guided, you and your children will have to solve a few clues – some harder than others – to make your way to the end of the map. What awaits where ‘X’ marks the spot? Well, you’ll just have to begin your adventure to find out!

If you prefer to explore the great outdoors, then why not explore the main attraction of Windermere; the lake. There are plenty of Windermere lake cruises to choose from and it’s the best way to beat traffic! You can explore the largest lake in the UK at your leisure, stopping off along the way to explore the shore and even visit an aquarium – perfect for a rainy day at the Lakes!

Family Events

Windermere Jetty Museum host a number of events throughout the year with family friendly activities not only in Windermere but throughout the Lakeland Arts venues across south Cumbria.

Whilst the youngsters are crafting, exploring or listening to the story telling take 15 minutes to recharge and make the most of the lakeside cafe with stunning views. Car parking is available and dogs are welcome in the cafe.

Why not step back in time with a heritage boat trip available in the summer months, this 30 minute tour will be filled with the history, people and landscape that has changed Windermere since the earliest settlers made their home here to the bustling tourist resort we know today.

Eating Out

What is the quintessential British family meal? If your mind didn’t spring to fish and chips, or at least think of them second, then you may not like fish. But, for those that do love a good chippy dinner, Bowness does not disappoint. At the famous Vinegar Jones chippy, you have a variety of traditional options, but there are also great gluten-free options to be found.

Or if you’re looking for a more substantial meal there is a range of other dining options throughout Windermere. Bistros, tapas, burgers and almost any other food you can imagine can be found within walking distance.

Of course, you could also come and visit our bar and restaurant here at the marina, Marina View Restaurant & Bar. With two fantastic terraces, a bar and a first-floor restaurant you will be spoilt for views as you dine day or night. On offer, there is everything from mussels to confit lamb, so don’t miss your chance to dig in! You are welcome to bring well-behaved children and your dogs.

For your next family holiday in the Lake District, Windermere can’t be beaten on things for you and your children to do together as a family. So, take a look at the holiday cottages and apartments we have available here at Windermere Marina Village.
