Family Activities in the Lakes This Summer

Windermere is an exuberant village full of activities to be enjoyed by the whole family.

Once you have booked your luxury self-catering accommodation in the Lake District, all that’s left to do is put your feet up and look forward to the entertainment and fun times that await you. Read on to find out more about some of the very best family activities you can take part in this summer during your visit to the Lake District.

Beatrix Potter Attractions

Every young child loves Beatrix Potter and, a bit like Disneyland, The World of Beatrix Potter has the power to even put a smile on a teenager’s face. There’s simply something heart-warming about the whole experience whether you’re strolling through the garden, sipping afternoon tea or participating in one of their many events. In this section, we look at which of their upcoming events you might want to enjoy with your family over the summer.

VIP Afternoon Tea Party with Peter Rabbit

These afternoon tea parties occur every day except for Fridays throughout July and August, so bring your children to share a delightful high-tea experience with them. The experience is very popular so you should always book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Where is Peter Rabbit? Musical Adventure

This musical adventure will take you and your family throughout the exploits and adventures of Potter’s amazing storybook creations, through the medium of theatre. It features fan favourites like Jemima Puddle-Duck, Peter Rabbit and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.

Prices range depending on your plans for the day; by booking a VIP Afternoon Tea Party with Peter Rabbit, you can enjoy a tour around the grounds, afternoon tea with Peter Rabbit himself and the show. You can purchase a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) to save some money too.

When is Glebe Farmer’s Market?

The Glebe Markets held on the Glebe feature on the first Friday of every month until September 8th, so if you’re in Windermere during one of these dates, then you might want to head over to Glebe for some rustic and family friendly shopping.

Stalls that will please you and your partner include Shed 1 Gin, but the little ones will also be interested in sampling some of the amazing cake from some of the best bakers in the Lakes and tasting some exquisite homemade preserves.

The event runs from 9:30am till 2:30pm, so be sure to get there early to enjoy the whole event.

What is the Prom Art Market?

A unique arts and crafts fair that has been running in Grange-Over-Sands since 2005, the Prom Art Market is not to be missed. The Prom Art Market is already well underway, having begun in April, but there are plenty more shows in the future for you to attend on the second Sunday of the month. The final date for the Prom Art in Glebe is Sunday 8th September.

Be aware that although the entry is free, not all traders can accept card payment, so we recommend carrying some cash with you just in case. Other features include disabled access, public toilets, refreshments, and dogs are welcome.

Delightful Summer Evening Buffet Cruise

This is a sophisticated event that is sure to fill your child with wonder and amazement. The boat cruise across Lake Windermere will help you and your family to experience our lake at its very best, while the buffet style food will be an opportunity to encourage your child to widen their palate, without the fear that there will be tantrums over an adventurous set course that they won’t like. This is a luxury event that is sure to be enjoyed by both you and your kids.

Tickets for this event must be booked in advance, your package will include a live band, buffet and tea & coffee. Remember to check for discounts as children and families can travel at reduced costs. The cruise leaves from Bowness pier 1 at 7pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, which is only a two-minute drive from our accommodation, a 10-minute bus journey or a 15-minute walk. The cruise is a return journey so you will be brought back to Bowness Pier 1 at the end of your evening.

The Lowther Show

On the weekend of the 10th and 11th of August 2019, what has often been named ‘the friendliest of country shows’ will be available for your entertainment at the stunning Lowther Castle. If you’re a fan of northern country culture, or simply interested in teaching your children more about the rural North, then you need to attend this fantastic showcase.

Be fulfilled with the Food & Beer Festival, amazed by the Lowther Hound Show and awed by the Lowther Horse Driving Trials. The Lowther estate is a full day out to be enjoyed on a normal day, but the annual Lowther Show gives a different perspective to these much-loved grounds and well worth the journey from our accommodation in Windermere.

There is so much to be enjoyed in Windermere and the surrounding areas this summer, so be sure to check back here to learn more about any unmissable events occurring during your stay with us.

We hope that you and your children enjoy yourselves, whether you’re sipping tea with Peter Rabbit or watching dogs jump obstacles at Lowther Castle.
