Things To Do On Wet Days in The Lake District

A rainy day in the Lake District doesn’t have to mean that your holiday can’t still be packed full of exciting activities. Windermere and the surrounding areas have plenty of fun events, activities and venues which are sure to take your rainy day blues right away.

Here are just a few activities that are perfect for the whole family to take part in on a damp day in the Lake District.

1 – The World of Beatrix Potter

Probably one of the most famous attractions in the Lake District, The World of Beatrix Potter is sure to brighten up even the rainiest day for the whole family.

The hour-long, self-guided tour is split into 8 separate areas and will take you on a magical journey through the world of Beatrix Potter. This particular section of the tour is best suited to children under the age of 8.

One of our personal favourites is Area 3 which plays host to The Peter Rabbit Garden; it really captures the essence of the world Beatrix Potter created and even includes the gooseberry bush and the net Peter Rabbit got stuck in when trying to escape Mr. McGregor.

Area 6 is a particular highlight for any children in your party, as you can take a virtual walk through Beatrix Potter’s countryside using a computer projection. You’ll experience 360-degree views and narration throughout this section of the tour, and there’s even a short film on The Tales of Mrs. Heelis to enjoy.

For the adults and older children in your group, Beatrix’s Hill Top House is a perfect for a rainy day in the Lakes. The house helped to inspire many of Beatrix Potter’s tales and the surrounding areas, rooms and contents all played a significant role in the fantastic books she produced.

2 – Lakeland Motor Museum

This interesting museum is perfect for those who love anything to do with cars.

Housing over 30,000 fascinating exhibits of road transport throughout the ages, you can explore the development of cycles, motorbikes, cars and automobilia.

Adult ticks cost just £7.95 when bought online, children tickets are priced at £4.75, and children under 5 are free.

There is even a café within the museum, so you don’t need to worry about packing your own food.

3 – Hays Garden World

If you’re heading to the Lake District before Christmas, you simply must pay a visit to the Hays Garden World Christmas displays.

You are sure to find an abundance of festive cheer as soon as you step foot in the garden centre, with magical ‘World of Christmas’ displays throughout. Hays Garden World is guaranteed to brighten up the even on the dullest of days with polar bears, penguins and, of course, reindeers aplenty.

You can also enjoy a light bite to eat in the Four Seasons Terrace Café, which boasts a wide variety of homemade meals including sandwiches, hot meals and plenty of sweet treats.

4 – Windermere Lake Cruises

Heading off on a cruise around Lake Windermere is a fantastic and stunning way to enjoy a spot of rain during your stay in the Lake District.

Hop on any cruises from Bowness and you can stop off at several locations around Lake Windermere, including Ambleside and Brockhole, amongst others. These fantastic cruises allow you to sit back and be ferried around the Lake District’s largest lake in style. We’d suggest a stop off in Ambleside, before heading back to Bowness for a well-earned break in your luxury apartment at Windermere Marina. If you’re looking for a more hands-on experience, you can also rent a self-drive boat. If you fancy yourself as a seafaring captain, this is most certainly your time to shine. There is plenty of fun to be had out on Lake Windermere, even when the weather is less than ideal.
