Things to Do in The Lake District: Golf

When you’re looking to enjoy all the Lake District has to offer during your stay, taking the time to enjoy a round of golf, surrounded by stunning scenery is certainly something we’d recommend you try out.

In our first article in the ‘Things to Do in The Lake District’ series, we thought it would be useful to give you some insight into the two stunning golf courses, which are within a stone’s throw of Lake Windermere and Windermere Marina Village. Both give you the perfect platform to relive this year’s spectacular Masters, where Tiger Woods came back to win the 15th major of his career, 11 years after his last win.

1 – Windermere Golf Club

Windermere Golf Club is situated right in the heart of the stunning Lake District and the 18-hole course measures up at a total of 5122 yards; par for this course is 67, with a standard scratch of 66.

Famous for its excellent condition all year round, Windermere Golf Club has some of the very best United States Golf Association (USGA) standard greens in the UK, along with fantastically kept fairways.

It’s also worth noting that due to this course sitting in the middle of a World Heritage Site and strict planning permissions in place, there are no bunkers in place at Windermere Golf Club. This, however, doesn’t make the course less of a challenge for players, with plenty of natural hazards, including heather and bracken in the rough, combined with rocky outcrops and narrow fairways.

If you’re looking to take some time to polish your golfing skills whilst on a break in the Lake District, Windermere Golf Club also has some great practice facilities you can take advantage of. There is an open 240-yard practice area, which is situated close to the 3rd hole, has flags set at 100, 150 and 200 yards, as well as a small pitching area. Be sure to bring your own practice balls along if you’re hoping to use this particular facility! You can also fine tune your chipping and putting game at Windermere Golf Club, the putting green and chipping area are situated by the Clubhouse, overlooking the 17th hole.

The course also boasts some genuinely stunning views, including Morecambe Bay to the south and even the Pennines in the East when conditions are good.

Windermere Golf Club is just a 5-minute drive away from Windermere Marina Village, so you don’t need to waste any time driving far for a great golfing experience when staying with us.

As a visitor, you can play all 18 holes at Windermere Golf Club for £40 per person, or if you’re looking to play in a group of 9 or more players you can benefit from a discounted price. If you are hoping to play a round or two at Windermere Golf Club, be sure to book in advance through their website to avoid disappointment!

2 – Beckside Golf Club

Beckside Golf Club is a stunning parkland golf course, situated between Bowness and Kendal. This 18-hole course is perfect for anyone who is looking for a shorter golfing experience whilst enjoying a break in the Lake District and does measure in at a relatively short 4220 yards, with par for this course sitting at 63.

Don’t be fooled into thinking this course will be a walk in the park because it is short. The course is comprised of 3 and 4 par holes, which can prove difficult even for the most seasoned golfing enthusiasts. It’s a challenging little course and is littered with plenty of uneven, rough grazing land, gorse bushes, bracken and boulders. Before being converted into a golf course, the land was actually used for farming, which has added to the difficulty of the course.

This course doesn’t have a clubhouse, you simply pay at the farmhouse, which is situated about half a mile away from the first tee. You can enjoy this course for just £10 per person, which is fantastic value for money and is seen as many golf enthusiasts as one of the hidden gems of the Lake District.

If you have already enjoyed Windermere Golf Club and are willing to travel a little further afield, you could choose to visit Beckside Golf Club. Situated just a 10-minute drive away from Windermere Marina Village, our self-catering accommodation in Windermere offers you the perfect base to enjoy a round of golf during your trip.

Keep your eyes peeled for more of our ‘Things to Do in The Lake District’ series on our blog in the coming months, as we continue to cover some of the fantastic activates you can take part in during your stay with us here at Windermere Marina Village.
