Experience the Charming Lake District in Autumn

We might be in the heat of Summer now but come Autumn you might find yourself dreaming of returning to the Lake District.

As the ancient trees turn from green to red, orange and gold, there is nowhere we would rather be than here in Windermere. In this article, we’re telling you about everything that you can enjoy during an Autumn break in our luxury self catering accommodation in Windermere, as a couple or with the family.

Term-Time Romance

The kids are back in school, which means smaller, much quieter crowds – the perfect chance for a romantic getaway when the Lake District is looking its most dramatic. Start getting excited for our gorgeous Autumn colour walks as the mists creep onto the lake.

There are plenty of opportunities for a romantic boat ride across the lake, afternoon tea for two, or even a fancy meal – all in Windermere. When you consider that the whole of the Lake District is on your doorstep from our accommodation, the possibilities for you and your partner seem endless.

Make sure that you don’t accidentally plan your child-free escape during half-term dates, however; October half-term in 2019 lasts from 19th till the 30th this year.

Half-Term Family Getaway

If you’re part of a family, then you might be anticipating the half-term as a chance to get some quality time with the children. The Lake District, especially Windermere, is very popular during the Autumn half term, so don’t miss your chance by leaving it until the last minute.

Experience wonder together by taking the children on one of the many spectacular Autumn colours walks available throughout the Lake District during this season. You could visit Buttermere, Ullswater or Rydal for unparalleled autumn views in Cumbria. Alternatively, you could book one of our family holidays in the Lake District for a view of Lake Windermere from your accommodation.

Aside from nature walks, there are also plenty of markets, cosy cafés and even castles to explore during your time away with us.

Wray Castle

Located just 4.2 miles outside of Windermere is the beautiful Wray Castle. This castle features some beautiful grounds to walk through, as well as frequently hosting indoor and outdoor activities for your children. Don’t forget your camera, because you’re going to want to document the fun you’re going to have watching your children race around looking for hidden treasures or dressing-up.

If you enjoy Beatrix Potter, then you’ll love Wray Castle; one of Potter’s favourite rooms here was the library, and occasionally the castle features some exhibitions or activities inspired by her work.

Throughout Autumn, Wray Castle is hosting talks and exhibitions on its architecture and history, but if you prefer to do things at your own pace, then the self-led nature walk might be more to your liking.

One of the best things about Wray Castle is that you can turn it into an afternoon or a full day out; will you drive to the castle, walk through the British landscapes, or traverse the Lake on a return cruise?

The World of Beatrix Potter

Many popular holiday attractions peak in the Summer months, but that’s certainly not true for Windermere and the surrounding Lake District; The World of Beatrix Potter (and the Lake District at large) comes alive in Autumn.

Featuring the typical Beatrix Potter attractions of afternoon tea with Peter Rabbit and the usual garden tours, there will also be the option to attend a special showing of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tell Me on a Sunday starting in October.

Whilst British beach holidays start winding down for the year; the Lake District stays busy and active to entertain you all year round.

Curl up in Cosy Cafés

Sometimes, one of the nicest Autumn experiences is to take some time out to people watch. Unwind behind a window with a hot mug of your favourite drink or snuggle up with an epic novel. We’ve suggested some of the best cafés in and around Windermere to help you achieve precisely this, whether you’re with a family or it’s just the two of you:

Chesters by the River

This gorgeous café by Skelwith bridge boasts a glorious selection of cake and tea; perfect for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea. This delicious little café is great for vegans and situated in a truly beautiful location overlooking the Brathay river.

Choccobar

Situated close to The World of Beatrix Potter, you could visit the Choccobar after a tour with Peter Rabbit. Amaze your children by giving them the selection of their dreams or share some churros and dipping chocolate with your partner. Even better, Choccobar offers gluten-free waffles.

The Boathouse Bar & Restaurant

Our restaurant in Windemere Marina Village is also a fantastic place to stop if you want to wind down. Especially good because you won’t have to venture far from your accommodation if you’re having a relaxed day, there are plenty of options on the lunch menu for you to try and enjoy, including a sumptuous sticky toffee pudding.

We know that you’ll love an autumn break in the Lake District with us, so don’t leave it till the last minute to book your stay
