Autumn Holidays in the Lake District

The Lake District is frequently referred to as one of the most stunning areas of natural beauty in the country. From its rolling hills to its tranquil lakes, meres and waters, it is no surprise that so many choose to return to the Lake District throughout the year.

From the summer months, where recent temperatures have been the highest recorded in the country, to the winter months, during which the white-topped mountains create a landscape that is simply bewitching, the area makes a brilliant destination for both short trips or longer stays.

Throughout July, the area is celebrating the first anniversary of being awarded the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage status, and it is clear to see why! As we move through the year, the environment continually adapts and evolves, providing the perfect backdrop for any type of holiday.

But what, particularly in autumn, makes the area so enticing?

The Lakes in Autumn

In the Northern Hemisphere, autumn officially lasts between the end of September (23rd), right up until December 21st. According to the National Trust’s website, Autumn is by far the most peaceful time to visit the Lakes.

Although there are many reasons why autumn is an ideal time for a vacation in the Lakes, however one of the main reasons is that the school term is back in full swing. With fewer families traveling to the Lakes during these months, the area is significantly less crowded. If you’re looking for a quieter getaway, autumn is defintely the right time of year to visit the Lakes.

The second most prominent reason are the breathtaking autumn colours. As the leaves start to turn, a rich display of colour erupts throughout the Lakes, providing one of the most visually stunning landscapes in the country. Yellows, oranges and browns…it is understandable how so much literature and culture has been born from an area of such natural beauty.

As the season progresses toward winter, the cooler weather is ideal for many outdoor activities, including those on the lake or even hiking – just make sure to pack the right equipment , in case of any autumnal showers! If you should happen to find yourself caught short in the rain, the abundance of local restaurants and eateries provide the perfect shelter.

What’s On

After a packed schedule during the height of summer, the fun still continues into autumn.

The final two weekends in October will bring the Peter Rabbit Tea Party, located at The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windermere. At 3:30 pm on October 20th and October 27th, Peter Rabbit himself will be brought to life for an afternoon of live storytelling, topped off with a magical tea party. A great event for the entire family – find out more here.

The Lake District is synonymous with brilliant walks and hikes. Double check the Lake District National Park website to see listings of all of the scheduled guided walks. With many varying in difficulty, and some beginning only a ten minute walk away from Windermere Marina Village, you can explore the natural landscape with an expert guide. We believe that Autumn is the perfect time to arrange a hike; the weather isn’t too hot or too cold, making it extremely comfortable walking weather.
