48 Hours in the Lake District

Each year visitors in their thousands flock to the Lake District to enjoy the stunning scenery, the marvellous attractions and a wealth of outdoor activities.

Whether staying for only a couple of nights or for a week, a visit to the Lake District is a guaranteed good time given how welcoming and adept the locals are at providing for tourists.

For those more constricted with time, we at Windermere Marina Village thought that it might be helpful to provide an itinerary for the ultimate stay in the Lake District; whether you are here for a day, a week or indefinitely, there is plenty to do.

Breakfast

Wake up in the peace and privacy of your very own accommodation at Windermere Marina Village and prepare for a full day ahead, all within the breathtaking Lake District National Park.

With all luxury apartments and cottages being self-catered, you have the option to either prepare your own breakfast selection or dine out. If you prefer to eat out only a short lakeside walk away you’ll find a wide range of independent cafes in Bowness to suit all tastes and needs! Our favourites include Monties, Mia Mondo and Chocco Bar but we’re sure you will find your favourite before you leave! If you’re staying with us at the weekend The Boathouse café onsite also offers a great breakfast choice!

Mid Morning

An excellent way to kick-start the day could be through getting out and about in the surrounding environment. After you have prepared for a fun-filled day, head out and explore the local area to get a feel for why generations of visitors have been returning for hundreds of years.

From activities on the water, including paddleboarding, cruising and wakesurfing, to activities on land (various hikes and local monuments such as The World of Beatrix Potter always proving popular), there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Still stuck for where to visit? Take a look at our top 5 places to visit in the Lake District. With recommendations from local bloggers, who knows what hidden gems you might discover!

Lunch

Whilst being known worldwide for its wealth of history and culture, many travel to the Lakes year after year to indulge in the top-notch local cuisine. Incredibly, Cumbria is home to four of the North West’s eight Michelin star restaurants, and there are many more local eateries hot on the heels of such culinary distinctions with their experimental flavours and fresh, locally-grown produce.

If more traditional food is preferred, there are numerous delicious restaurants, café’s and bars around Windermere that are ideal for all members of the family – we refer to a couple in a previous blog post, Places to Eat & Drink on the Lake.

TOP TIP – Particularly in peak season, pre-booking is definitely recommended.

Afternoon

A few hours ambling around the local area after lunch is a great way to spend your time. And what better way to spend your afternoon than with a bit of shopping! The picturesque village of Bowness-on-Windermere is only a short walk away and is home to some of the best shopping in the entire county.

From local businesses such as herdy, Bath House and Love the Lakes (more on those here), to the larger shops that stock the everyday items that visitors may require, there is an impressively varied selection.

Evening

After a long day filled with various activities, kick back and relax in comfortable surroundings. However you plan to spend your evening, there is a plethora of excitement to be had in the Lakes.

The local cinema dates back to the 1930s and is a fantastic way to spend an evening, and dependent on which film is selected, can be suitable for all members of the family.

The wonderful entertainment schedule at the on-site Boathouse Bar & Restaurant is faultless if something slightly more lively is required, or why not try one of the amazing evening Lake Cruises? Only available during the summer months, and with some that offer an evening meal, the visually stunning trips some are an excursion that you won’t want to miss.

For a more slow paced evening, why not take a stroll around the stunning surrounding area? There is a lovely walk along the shoreline of Windermere via Cockshot Point, perfect for viewing the amazing sunsets over the remarkable fells.

Surrounding hills such as Brant Fell make for a fantastic and dramatic setting at the end of a superb day, or alternatively take in the breathtaking views and amazing sunset from your very own balcony, right here at Windermere Marina Village. A perfect end to a perfect day.

Stay in the heart of the Lake District all year round at Windermere Marina Village.
