The Lake District is one of the best places to spend Halloween. It has plenty of spooky events for both adults, children and families to enjoy. Even if you aren’t looking for events, the Lake District is positively charged with gothic energies, particularly in the Autumn season with crimson trees, misty mountains and twisting windblown trees. Wherever you are in the Lake District this Halloween, you’ll be feeling those spooky vibes.
Witches and Wizards Week - Mon 22nd Oct 2018 – Fri 26th Oct 2018
We’re kicking it off strong with Witches and Wizards Week down in Haverthwaite. This is an annual event that shouldn’t be missed. Explore the haunted carriage which the station claims has been trapped in Haverthwaite tunnel for many years. This event involves a train ride to the Lakeside from Haverthwaite where there will be more fun at the Aquarium as part of the ticket prices. Onboard the train there will be creepy crafts in a carriage entirely dedicated to Halloween fun.
Standard ticket fares apply with adult returns costing £6.90, note that kids in fancy dress are permitted to board the Halloween train for free when accompanied by one full paying adult. Haverthwaite is a simple twenty-minute drive from Windermere Marina Village.
Pumpkin Walk - Wed 24th Oct 2018 – Thu 25th Oct 2018
The pumpkin walk in Grange-over-Sands is a tried-and-tested annual event. It’s a simple enough concept; display a variety of beautifully carved pumpkins along the promenade. Stroll along Grange’s promenade and survey these smouldering vegetables. The promenade café will be open for refreshments throughout this event.
The best-carved pumpkin wins a prize, so perhaps you’ll want to get in on the action by carving your own pumpkin in our accommodation beforehand. Get creative and consider painting your pumpkins too!
If you’re looking for something a little creepier this Halloween, consider getting one of the guided tours across Grange’s killer quicksand, or pick up Jenn Ashworth’s book ‘Fell’ from 2016 for some locally based Gothic literature. Grange-over-Sands is a mere twenty-five minutes’ drive from Windermere Marina Village, and well worth the journey this Halloween.
Halloween Masquerade Ball - Sat 27th Oct 2018
An event that’s sure to wow, Beech Hill Hotel’s Halloween-themed masquerade promises a touch of elegance, champagne, and a string quartet. Be sure to pack some semi-formal clothes for this event, and don’t forget your mask.
Tickets cost £49 per person and is just a six-minute drive from the Windermere Marina Village.
Halloween Spooky Fun Days - Sat 27th Oct 2018 – Sun 28th Oct 2018
If you were excited by the Witches and Wizards week but can’t attend those days, fear not! The Millerbeck Light Railway is hosting their own set of spooky carriages, so there’s no reason why you should miss out on a creepy train journey this Halloween. This event recommends that passengers and participants come dressed to thrill to make the most of the experience.
A day for all ages and there is no need to book ahead. This event is only a fifteen minute drive away from Windermere Marina Village.
Alternatively, you can take part in a long tradition of gothic characters wandering about in atmospheric rural settings. Take after Jane Eyre, Victor Frankenstein, and American Werewolf in London by hiking around nature.
The Lake District hosts a number of exciting walks, but we recommend a trip to the appropriately named ‘Boo Tarn’ at the base of the Old Man of Coniston. The trip to Boo Tarn starts with the half hour drive from Windermere Marina Village to Coniston car park. The walk then proceeds quite easily along the base of Coniston. You’re unlikely to see any ghosts at the tarn, but beware the lack of public toilets at Coniston carpark!
Windermere Marina Village is the perfect place to commute from to all your favourite Lake District Halloween events this October. We offer plenty of pet-friendly, self-catering accommodation in the lake district’s heart: Windermere.
